Selection guide - information about temperature protection

Certainly we will support you to choose the suitable controller. The following information should be helpful for you
to find a decision


Do you want to...

..maintain a temperature in a fixed range and regulate the temperature within this range?



With our Temperature Controls you can regulate a temperature easily and inexpensive within a fixed temperature range.
The Temperature Controls are to be serial connected in the circuit (e.g. heating). The temperature is controlled by
automatically switching on/off of the heating.

The difference between on/off, also called hysteresis, depends on the chosen series and the reaction temperature. The
lowest differential of 1,5K is at the Capillary Thermostats. On the class A of the MQT-series it is from 2K up to 4K, up to
10K and 50K depending on the selected series and the reaction temperature. Possible switching loads are between 5mA
at 42VDC up to 16A at 250VAC. The higher the switching load, the more reduced is the number of the possible cycles.
Installed in a controlled circuit the MQT-series has a large number of possible cycles, depending on surrounding conditions,
switching temperature and the differential.

Possible Temperature Controls of the following series:

- 03EN, 03EP, from -10°C up to 150°C
- 52N, 52P from 50°C up to 250°C
- 11EN, from -10°C up to 150°C, low dimension case
- 10N, from 50°C up to 230°C
- MQT / M3, from -10°C up to 110°C, small hysteresis, long-life
- Kapi, Capillary Thermostats with hysteresis up to 1,5K, adjustable
- H702, up to 400°C
- HT97, from 300°C up to 440°C
- 161.481, ceramic housing with reaction temperature from 320°C and 355°C

..limit a temperature and protect the application against high temperatures


with manual reset of the limiter


The limiters are used to prevent too high temperatures, caused by malfunction or failure of other elements. On reaching
the fixed temperature the limiters switch off the circuit. An automatic reset above -35°C is not possible.

After removing the malfunction you can reset the limiter for finishing your production process under special monitoring.
It is like a resettable fuse. Therefore, the user must make a conscious act to make a reset. As a result, you are drawn to
a system error that must have caused the overheating and then you can act accordingly.

Possible Limiters with manual reset are the following series:

- 05EN, with rest stick, from 50°C up to 150°C at 16A /230VAC
- 23EN, with reset button, from 50°C up to 150°C at 16A/230VAC
- 15N, with reset button, from 50°C up to 250°C at 10A/230VAC

with electrical self-holding-system


The limiters with electrical self-holding-system are used to prevent too high temperatures, caused by malfunction or
failure of other elements. On reaching the fixed temperature the limiters switch off the circuit. An automatic reset above
-35°C is almost not possible, but depends on the outside conditions.

The reason for the self-holding-system is a parallel mounted resistor. It holds the switching device open after reaching
the temperature. After cooling-down or cutting the power supply, an automatically reset will follow. After removing the
malfunction you can reset the Limiter for finishing your production process under special monitoring. It is like a
resettable fuse. Therefore, the user must make a conscious act to make a reset. As a result, you are drawn to a system
error that must have caused the overheating and then you can act accordingly. This kind of Limiter is recommended for
all applications, when the reset button could never be reached for manual resetting, because of narrow housings and
less space.

Possible Limiters with electrical self-holding are the following series:

- SP1, with PTC self-holding, from 70°C up to 180°C at 2,5A / 250VAC

with automatically reset


The Thermal Protectors are used to prevent an exceeding of a fixed temperature. On reaching the switching-off
temperature the integrated bimetal disc turns over and cut-off or close the circuit. After cooling down the bimetal disc
turns back in its initial position and close or cut-off the circuit.

The difference to the Controller is mainly that the Thermal Protectors have a larger differential. Therefore it needs
more time until the automatically reset effects. This is why the regulating of temperatures with these products is not
useful. In addition, these components are tested usually and certified with a switching frequency of 10,000 cycles.

Possible Thermal Protectors are the following series:

- 01, from 60°C up to 200°C at 2,5A / 230VAC
- 05, from 50°C up to 200°C at 5A / 230VAC
- 06, from 60°C up to 200°C at 10A / 230VAC


Do you want to..

..cut-off an application by a Temperature Fuse to prevent possible damages, caused by too high temperatures


(e.g. malfunction of the application)


Here we recommend an irreversible Temperature Fuse. The Temperature Fuses are an effective and inexpensive way
to avoid and cut-off the risk of overheating. The Fuses of the SF/E series looks similar to diodes and are suitable for
the protection of applications in danger surroundings.

From simple coffee machine to large industrial plants – the Temperature Fuses of the SF/E series can be found every-
where. If the factory-adjusted temperature is activated by a malfunction or incorrect operation, the Fuse cut-off the
circuit up to 16A at 250VAC. After activating the Fuse must be replaced completely, a resetting is not possible.

Possible Temperature Fuses of the following series:

- SF-E / SM, diode-shaped, 73°C up to 240°C and up to 16A/230VAC
- 87N, cylindrical-shaped, with lots of mountings and possibilities for applications up to 270°C. Voltage-free housing.
